Mental health isn’t one-dimensional — and neither should our approach to healing be. At Internal Sunshine, we embrace the biopsychosocial model, a holistic framework that considers the complex interplay between biological, psychological, and social factors in shaping our mental health.
What Is the Biopsychosocial Model?
Developed by psychiatrist George Engel, the biopsychosocial model moves beyond the traditional medical perspective. Instead of viewing mental health concerns as isolated chemical imbalances or behavioral issues, it recognises the whole person — their body, mind, and environment.
Let’s break it down:
Biological factors include genetics, neurochemistry, physical health, and medication.
Psychological factors cover emotions, thoughts, trauma history, coping styles, and personality.
Social factors involve relationships, family dynamics, culture, community support, socioeconomic status, and access to care.
All three dimensions are interconnected and influence one another. For example, chronic stress (a psychological factor) can impact the immune system (a biological response), which might be worsened by lack of support (a social factor).
Why This Matters in Therapy
At Internal Sunshine, this model guides how we collaborate with clients. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method, we personalise care plans that reflect your lived experience, strengths, and unique challenges.
For instance, a client struggling with anxiety might benefit from:
Biological support, such as referrals to GPs or psychiatrists when needed.
Psychological tools, like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness, or emotion regulation strategies.
Social exploration, such as addressing work-life boundaries, family stressors, or feelings of cultural disconnection.
By approaching mental health from all sides, healing becomes more sustainable and deeply rooted.
Our Holistic Philosophy
We believe mental wellness is not just the absence of illness — it’s the presence of balance, connection, and meaning in life. Our team is passionate about empowering individuals and families to thrive, not just survive.
Whether you’re navigating trauma, parenting challenges, neurodiversity, or life transitions, we’re here to support your whole self — not just your symptoms.
